What astronomy studies
Astronomy is the scientific study of objects and phenomena beyond Earth: stars, planets, moons, comets, galaxies, nebulae, and the large-scale universe. Observational astronomy begins with direction and time. The sky above an observer changes as Earth rotates, while the visible planets and Moon also move against the more distant star background.
The Open-Galileo sky map uses an observer’s latitude and longitude to build a topocentric view—what the sky looks like from that place on Earth. How to use the interactive night-sky map
- Set your location. Enter latitude and longitude so altitude, azimuth, and the horizon match your observing site.
- Choose From Earth. The sky view projects the celestial sphere around your local zenith.
- Search an object. Find a named star, deep-sky object, or satellite and inspect its catalog information.
- Move time. Pause the live clock or accelerate it to study how the sky changes.
- Observe through the telescope. Step through magnification and aperture presets while the instrument tracks the selected star.
Stars, planets, and deep-sky objects
Stars are represented using catalog position, apparent magnitude, color index, and—where available—distance and luminosity. Apparent magnitude describes brightness from Earth: lower numbers are brighter. Color index helps distinguish hot blue-white stars from cooler yellow, orange, and red stars.
Planets are nearby worlds orbiting the Sun, so their positions change noticeably relative to the constellations. Deep-sky objects include star clusters, nebulae, and galaxies. They often need darker skies or more aperture than bright stars, which is why Open-Galileo separates telescope magnification from limiting magnitude.
Constellations and the zodiac
Constellations are named regions of the sky that help people organize and navigate the star field. The zodiac constellations lie along the ecliptic, the Sun’s apparent annual path. Astronomy uses these regions as standardized sky geography; astrology uses a related set of signs as a cultural and symbolic system. Open-Galileo identifies that distinction while letting users explore the actual sky geometry.
